12 May 2008 1:10 amThe human psyche boggles me sometimes.. because I have two papers tomorrow that last from 8am to 5pm with a 2-hour break in between, and here I am.. blogging! I am as prepared as.. insert analogy here lah lazy to think now wtf.
The first camera that I’ve ever handled was my parents’ orange Kodak film-based camera when I was 12 years old (as far back as I could remember) which, well, had met its natural demise after being branded as technologically obsolete (but many a shot have been snapped and made very memorable). Then came along the black Fujifilm S5000 with a 5x optical zoom which proved marginally useful when wanting to zoom into unsuspecting girls across our class at the opposite block in high school (obviously it was my other friends who were too free to do such a thing), and then when its auto-focus was spoilt, it now lie somewhere in my house collecting layers of dust.
Next was a Sony Cybershot DSC-W50 which was purchased in April 2006 to replace the old black faithful which have seen most of its days serving my school’s Photography Club and the school magazine’s editorial board. Then fast forward to December 2006 where I lost the camera at SS15’s Station One (never going back there) on Christmas Eve. :(
Then had to get a new camera in January 2007 because there are a few things I can’t do without and one of these includes a camera, which I christened as Ixion, true to my gadget-naming habit in the past. The Canon Ixus 850 IS served me very well up to now, even went missing twice when I was kayaking at a river in Laos but was miraculously found.
But up till these few days, I suddenly felt the itch to bring my photography a step further.. and the only natural progression was a DSLR.
And so!!!
I parted ways with RM3730 on Saturday evening at Amcorp Mall to get a brand new Canon EOS 450D (RM28xx) + EF-S 18-55mm IS kit lens, and an additional 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lens (RM8xx) for my telephoto aspirations. And yes those seemingly nonsensical numbers and letters sounded like tribal mumbo-jumbo the first time I saw it but of course lah I had to learn what the hell they meant. Does it not sound cool to say I have a 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lens?? (Actually no it’s like a low-end lens wtf.)
I daresay it was almost an impulsive buy but I did hours and hours of researching on local forums and Googling a few days before finally making the purchase.. didn’t want to do so until I’m finally done with my exams but my dad popped the question if I want to have a look at the camera at a shop his ex-colleague was recommending.. and the originally intended window-shopping turned into actual purchase wtf.
I’m now a proud owner of a Canon EOS 450D
and I’m excited to share this slice of news to the world. But this is going to be a fucking expensive hobby (don’t plan to expand to include more lenses yet), because the Nissin Speedlite Di622 flash that I’m planning to purchase costs RM480. =_____=
Yeah didn’t have much chance to play around with the camera fully yet.
OMG 1:02am already and I still have a few topics of Marketing Principles not yet finalised!! So quick photos below before I go:

Wide-angle perspective of where I normally hang out in my room: in front of the laptop wtf.

Brandon modelling for me for a bit while waiting for me to finally finish burning his Lagu Patriotik songs for him.

Obligatory sohai collage of yours truly with my new primary camera. <3
In the one month holiday that follow after my exams, I intend to sharpen up my DSLR skills enough so that one day I will be employed as an official photographer for you guys’ weddings and can take beautiful wedding photos for my extended family =D. At least, that’s the goal for now – and I intend to seek some of you out (Suet, Jess, etc) to model for me to practise my photography skills on (nudity is optional wtf).

Congratulations on your purchase! I’m sure it’s a well buy, as I’ve read numerous reviews on it before deciding to get my Nikon D60 =)
Have fun with your new toy and hope it’ll turn out to be something more than just a hobby! Do post more pictures after your exams. Cheers.

wow grats i’m about to get mine soon too! have been doing some surveys for a while now and…u can actually get the body for just RM2399 and kit set for RM300 :x
i’m new to dlsr too so i’ve been looking around a lot and asking for advice…sorry to hear u got that tele lens >.< ;
should have gotten the body only and obtained the
Wide angle: 24-105 f4L
Tele zoom: 70-200 f2.8L IS or f/4L IS
Macro: 100mm f2.8 (this can wait)
This is what i’ve came up with for a first time dlsr owner. just imo kinda thing. whatca think? since u’ve used urs for a few months now. like it?

considering that i bought it a few months ago.. yeah i think that prices would’ve dropped lol.
yeah i actually have not been using my tele lens that much. :/ kinda like a waste..
hahaha i don’t have that much money to buy L lenses lah, though yes if you have the money, by all means get the L lenses. I recently bought an ultra-wide angle lens, Canon 10-22mm, and have been loving it since. :)
yes i definitely like using my 450D very much. can foresee myself using it for a long time in the future.
my next dream lens is 24-70 f2.8 L, to replace the kit lens, though I really don’t think I’m getting it anytime soon.
hope you’ll get to buy your dslr and enjoy using it as much as i have. =)

I just got my too. Trying to learn some skills
How’s the 55-250mm zoom lens performance?

It works fine, the IS works excellently too – it goes hand-in-hand with the zoom.
Although like I said, I don’t really use it that much. :/

ah okies okies. I just learnt something new after posting…HAHAHA the “L” series is something that I can only dream about LOL. asked advice from my friend and he gave me those specs. crazy idiot lol
i’ve recently gotten poisoned into the 40D. but my issue is budget. I want to get a good cam but at the same time I don’t want to gimp out on the lens. I want to at least get a better than kit lens. so I’m kinda lost now. some say kits lens is good, some say they ask u to buy kit sets just so that they can get rid of their inventory. so confused now.

haha that’s why i’m surprised.. that if you’ve just started, so fast get into L lenses? :P but no problem lah for those who are really freaking rich.
this is just my humble opinion.. but I think you should get a not-so-good body (even though for me 450D is good enough, and obviously 40D is much better) and use the money that you saved from not getting the 40D to get even better lenses. it really makes a huge difference.
i actually kinda regretted getting the kit lens. it’s okay for normal usage, but could be better. some recommended using 3rd party 18-55mm f/2.8 (sigma or tamron, forgot which, could be both), which would obviously beat the kit lens flat lol.
