I’ve just finished talking to Andy on the phone, and it strikes me how I actually love conversing on this valuable communication equipment. Talking - something I somewhat enjoy - seems much easier to do sometimes over the phone for reasons I know not of; maybe the fact it guarantees some degree of anonymity compared to using the Internet (with almost 100% anonymity depending on how much you wish to reveal) makes it a catalyst for good conversations.
Not that my telephone conversations are that long these days anyway (or the recent years for that matter), as the privilege of dialling through your mobile phone doesn’t come cheap.
5 years back, handphones are seen as a luxury item, and I remembered using my trusty ol’ cordless phone back then every so often, engaging in animated conversations with my primary school friends over very trivial matters that could last ten minutes, twenty minutes or more - calling another person’s house is probably dirt cheap as opposed to calling to a mobile number.
Longest telephone conversation that I could remember is probably almost an hour long with Julia, 5-6 years back.
Of course if you’ve said that you too have a long telephone conversation, it’s probably with your boyfriend/girlfriend, no? Have you ever tried just sitting down and engage in a long telephone conversation with a friend in the very recent years?
I just missed the connection, talking on the phone for minutes and minutes long instead of using instant messengers like MSN Messenger (Windows Live as it is known as now). I just missed the closeness, the relative bond you have with the person on the other end - nothing sexual, nor lovey-dovey, just a simplistic joy in being able to connect with the other party in a semi-realistic manner, without being obscured by virtual barriers like the Internet.
Imagine how 3G’s video-call would change the meaning of phoning entirely, which I’m not rich enough to bother with (not that anyone else around me uses 3G, so it’s pointless to get one anyway).
Browsing through my received/dialled calls show an average of 30 seconds per conversation, with the exception of Andy’s call of 16 minutes 23 seconds made at 1am earlier about Accounting.
Drop me a line today.
