29 Aug 2007 1:11 amYesterday (so I said as it’s past midnight) took a small step out of our dreary college routine. After our lunch at Asia Cafe, we were crossing the street to return to our college when we spotted a colourful 98.8 van (it’s the famous local Chinese radio station, in case you’re too ignorant about such things). “九八八!” I exclaimed loudly, as it had become such an eloquent, catchy catchphrase that I couldn’t resist repeating it out loud.
Just as I feared, the lady who was standing outside began approaching us and talked in rapid Mandarin like a bullet train. I’m glad that all the Chinese lessons for the past 10 months or so paid off as I actually understood 80% of wtf she was saying, my only problem was my enunciation and what to reply exactly as my vocabulary is still rather limited.
But I digress wtf.
Anyway we were supposed to play little games and win little prizes, but it started to pour rather heavily. We stood right in front of the bookshop near Starbucks, and there and then commenced the ‘session’ or whatever it really was from 新开心车队 (the vehicle so-named, ala Hitz.FM’s Cruiser).
The MCs were hilarious, witty, and spoke really fast while trading funny little banters with one another – even if I didn’t exactly understood some of the words used. We were required to answer a few questions (as usual, they tried their best in giving us hints) and one of the few I had to answer was:
“What’s the name of one of our DJs?”
I was stumped, as I merely skimped through the radio station occasionally and didn’t even know anyone there. The MC began mouthing off some name in Chinese which I obviously couldn’t fathom, but Chai Huey came to the rescue. :D
One of the upcoming local Chinese singers, Serene (not Liew Suet Li wtf), came down from the van wearing a mask. Apparently she wears it because her songs are mostly rock-ish and due to societal prejudice on girls singing rock songs, she decided to don it wtf.
Which in any case she revealed her true face to us!

Sorry a bit blur since it’s snapped with my phone (I always seem to NOT bring out my camera at the most inopportune times) but she’s really pretty wtf.

The clearest pic I have where she just gazed dreamily at me wtf. She was belting out her song, Jane, which was actually quite nice.
I also had to scream their slogan as loud as I can wtf, and act out a rock pose wtf, but the latter effort net me a personally-signed poster from dear Serene <3.

Pui Yan had to sing a line or two of her favourite song LOL, while the guy was supposed to dance around her which he didn’t wtf. In the end she sang ‘Tong Hua’ while trying to stifle laughters and earned an RM50 voucher for Neway wtf.
The crowd was far too small frankly, but maybe more because it was raining and Malaysians’ general hypocritic shyness of giveaways (“I want the free gifts but I malulah” wtf). We left the place at nearly 2pm when the entire thing ended, and I left with a big smile on my face because it had been a while since I participated in anything as remotely interesting as this (that’s how busy and sad my college life is these days wtf).
(Last week Chai Huey, Pui Yan, and I joined this Prudential contest thingy in our college which lasted about 10 minutes which was also remotely interesting as it involved an ‘intelligent’ game involving breaking into a case which was more luck than anything else, playing a PS2 racing game which I won marginally by 3 seconds from the cut-out time, and Pui Yan won in the rock climbing category by literally 0.80+ seconds wtf.)
I’ll hopefully update whenever possible, assignments and exams are a-calling and a-hollering and a-yodelling wtf.
