Kungfu Sweetheart

Yesterday, went to Summit to catch a movie with Eugene, Daniel, Andy and Kai Tzin - My Kungfu Sweetheart. After hearing rave reviews from Wai Hong that it was apparently good, I had my reserves since Hong Kong movies are bound to be bad at some point (The Park and The Eye 10 - both horror movies - come to mind).

We were 10 minutes late (being unpunctual Malaysians who live up to this un-glorious name) but we could still purchase the tickets and enter.

The opening scene sees the name of the director, Wong Jing, and Daniel whispered to me saying that this particular director is famous for his lame shows. I winced in horror.

Being a romantic comedy, it shines through its extremely lame jokes (which is actually a good thing, because it’s the only thing that will otherwise comfort us about the fact that we spent RM6 to literally watch a director infamous for his terribly lame movies). Even the director himself acts in the movie.

Here are the highlights of the good points of My Kungfu Sweetheart:

- Cecilia Cheung appearing in almost every scene. *drools*

- Leo Ku looks great next to Cecilia.

- Extremely, lame jokes like the father being a “COOO” at the local zoo which denotes “Chief Osi Oliu Officer”.

The ugly:

- Clich?d storyline I’ve seen being reused OVER AND OVER AGAIN (one of the criminals being Himalayas Singh). Girls likes guy, guy dying/infected by some terminal disease, girl gives miracle elixir which erases guy’s memory, guy lives again but forgets girl, guy remembers in the end. Lovelovehughugkiss.

- What makes it so unbelievable is how the guy finally remembers the girl 20 minutes (movie time) after drinking said elixir.

- Terrible special effects. They might as well not use any at all.

- Kungfu my ass, Fearless’ martial arts looks great, believable and way better under the master Jet Li.

We picked up Esther, then went to Asia Cafe at about 10pm to meet up with Shawn, Heng and Ju-Lien who was playing pool, but since the rest had yet to eat, we ate/drink first.

Played pool for a while before all of us went back at near midnight.

Sometimes, among my own friends, I wonder if I’m the only adventurous lot who wants and dares to go for unique experiences.
