15 Jul 2009 2:54 amI woke up Monday morning to a disastrous display on my laptop – colours were wildly off where orange became blue, and blue became a tangent of odd white, and I’m confounded: did the heater in my room melt the liquid in the LCD? Did my leaving my laptop on 24/7 nearly everyday has finally taken a toll on my LCD screen or my graphics card? Or is my laptop just dying of old age, considering that I’ve recently replaced the DVD drive when it refused to read or burn discs?
Sigh. I thought of replacing my laptop (I thought I can survive with these exceedingly ugly graphics for a semester, but now I’ve second thoughts), but for the same model in Australia (at least, for the Dell Studio 15 laptop that I looked up), it’s at least RM1k more expensive than purchasing in Malaysia, no thanks to the extremely unattractive exchange rate right now. What should I do?
---
And here’s a tour of my ‘house’! I took these on Monday while I was about to leave to head to the city and use the Internet in my uni’s computer lab.

My room! The curtains were rolled up just for this picture – I normally had them rolled down.

Um yeah, I don’t plan on rearranging the mess that is my bags near the door.

The hallway right outside of my door. I forgot to snap a pic of my toilet & shower (yeah they’re both.. separate, for some horribly odd reason – means I have to break away from my routine of crapping then shower wtf), but they’re to the right as you walk down a bit from this hallway.

Staircase.

And right after the staircase, you’ll see the kitchen which doubles up as a “common room” – no television, despite what Jessie (the staff of Rooms International) told me, but it’s not like I’d watch the telly anyway.

The opposite angle of the kitchen.

Outside of my ‘house’ – the first blue door you see in the picture (roughly in the middle of this pic) is where I live.

The exit to the streets.

The laundry area, where you can also park your bikes, and at the end of this path is a shack.

The shack contains an ironing board, a coin-operated washing machine ($3) and a coin-operated dryer ($2) – all of which I’ve yet to use, especially since I’ve been washing clothes while I’m showering now.

Walsh St – where I’m located at. It’s a pretty quiet street (and a quiet area too), and it takes only about 5 minutes to walk to Queen Victoria’s Market, which means it’s kinda scary to walk back at night but I was told it’s a relatively safe area, so we’ll see about that.

My place – Walsh West Residence.
---
My forays into the world of culinary delights saw me eating toast bread and boiled beef and honey sausages for three nights straight – Monday night (the third night) saw me eating the same food while watching the 2nd episode of the first season of Nip/Tuck, with the additional ingredient being the chilli sauce I used from my housemate without permission, and just as I was about to finish my meal, I realised that the sausages were actually only half-cooked fml.
Then this morning (Tuesday), Ethan came over to my place after purchasing some stuffs at Woolworths, QV, and started whipping up spaghetti for the both of us – it wasn’t restaurant-worthy, but I must say it was quite edible and I’m not complaining, and it beats eating cereals for a change (my lunches these days were mostly brunches).
And so, with the knowledge of spaghetti-cooking (or rather, minced beef) from Ethan and omelette-making from Matt, I fused the two ideas and I present to you les œufs avec du boeuf, des tomates et une saucisse:

My signature dish coming to a diner near you. Ingredients used: sunflower oil, minced beef, Italian spices (peppered a little on the beef), two “extra large” eggs (looked pretty normal-sized to me), cut cherry tomatoes, and toast bread.

The way I used to eat it – with toast bread, what else.

Clem approved!
I was actually worried whether I had done it properly, ‘cause the beef that I peppered into the egg (mixed with soy milk, as per Matt’s suggestion since I can’t ingest milk) was still pink and not brown.. until I realised that I had to flip the beef over to get the entire thing properly cooked. And it actually tasted kinda good. ^_^
..except for the fact that I had intended my eggs to turn into an omelette and it ended up as scrambled eggs instead wtf.
So in the end, I took about an hour and 20 minutes to prepare the thing, eat it, and wash up – a waste of good time if you ask me. >_> And I’m still light years away to becoming even remotely good in cooking.

Haha, but it’s getting a bit easier, right? Even just a little? Once you get the hang of it there’s really only so many ways you can be asked to prepare something, so you can get bold and experiment more. =p
As you get more experience under your belt you’ll find that you can multitask and do things quicker, so it won’t always take an hour to make breakfast. And if you ever get an inkling for something new, lemme know and I’ll try and give you tips on how to go about it (not that I’m by any means a great chef of course lol).

matt: yeah it’s getting a tiny bit easier.. lol. i suppose it’s always the starting point that’s the most difficult.. and I think I just sorta am one left foot out of that starting point. >_>
i’ll take up your offer on it. ^_^ it still takes me about an hour plus to prepare my dinner, eat it, and clean up for now.
suet: yeah i know right? but with the slightly higher price that i pay, that’s what i get lol. hahaha alright thanks for the tips!
sibs: it’s a student accommodation – i don’t think it’s a hostel because I’m actually sharing a ‘house’ with 4 other people, and we share the toilet and kitchen too. would that be considered as a hostel?
oooh sweet! will check that out now – and i definitely welcome any easy recipes like that. :P

The staircase picture looks kinda creepy, maybe because of its dim light. :P Hehe.
The cooking part reminds me of myself because previously I didn’t know anything about cooking. I can tell you that I rarely cook that I can even count my fingers on the numbers of cooking by myself. Hehe. But now slightly better. Hehe. So, Gambateh lah! :D

Hehe yeah, I’m slowly learning myself. Albeit too slowly lol. But well, I suppose when you’re thrown into a foreign land all by your own, you’ll slowly pick up some skills to survive.

haha not bad your room is pretty much more spacious than mine. but that’s because I’m in a budget so i only have a rent of AU100
About the cooking trust me you’ll cook better. All the more better and faster if you have a super tight schedule but usually if you’re not from engineering or med you should generally have more free time.
Not bad tho. Looks pretty comfy

hehe yeah i’d like to think i’m getting better with the spaghetti, but it’s pretty much the only thing i know how to cook now. still have yet to experiment with others.
thanks! :P
