17 Sep 2006 6:51 pmI’m supposed to be asleep but I missed not blogging for several days, so nyeh!
Saturday night, I went to this Sek Yuen Restaurant in KL, more specifically, it was somewhere near Pudu Jail. I was wondering why my relatives decided to celebrate four of their birthdays in a restaurant situated at a post-war building (read: very, very old-looking), since being the rich bastards that they are, they usually hold them in grand typical Chinese restaurants, occasionally in our own private rooms, and even more periodically the rooms would have karaoke.
So yep back to this Sek Yuen restaurant, the first thing that struck me as odd is the choice of this particular quaint place, made especially more out of the ordinary when it was raining at that time, making the atmosphere of being in a post-World War II even more real.
What were hanging on the walls were larger-than-life fake cemented lobsters, followed by a large calligraphy of some sort, probably an idiom since it has four characters (or something, if I’m not mistaken from what I could remember). The old men (almost every other table was occupied by senior citizens) were loud and quite obnoxious in all their Cantonese-speaking glory, so it was fairly understandable in the Malaysian Chinese context.
And.. hoho even the waiters and waitresses were in their 60s and 70s. There was this grandma who looked like she was in her 50s or 60s with dyed purple hair wtf. But I have to admit she does look good in that.

The interior. Notice how totally 70s the walls were. Notice the waiter and waitress standing, where the two of them argued loudly earlier over which dish should go to which table.
Our first dish was quite cold: cold chicken, cold jelly thingy - it was supposed to be a traditional Chinese dish served normally in weddings, and you won’t be able to find such a dish in modern Chinese restaurants. Other meals were quite the norm, such as shark fin’s soup, chicken, fish, mee, etc.
There were two large tables and one small table for the house managers (aka maids) and young children. The total bill we racked up was amazing.. for four families.
RM969.90.
Seriously wtf. It wasn’t even a luxurious place, I can’t even begin to think of the places I could eat with that much money.
Reached home at 10pm, went out again at about 10.30pm in Shawn’s car with the planned mamak from Heng.. Jess was in the car as well. We met up with Andy (separate car), Fang Chyuan, Wai Hong, and Daniel (separate car). Suet came by herself soon after she finished her Mousetrap play at Taylor’s.
We left at about 1am, then in two separate cars minus the girls, we went to Purple Hills to indulge on the scenery. Apparently Shawn had the urge and desire to satisfy his eyes eating up Purple Hills, and even though the sight may not look as lovely as it did the first time I went there at night, the cold wind made it worthwhile to be there.
Reached home at nearly 3am.

Went at about 5pm plus on Sunday with Andy in my large Serena to SS15’s Autosurf where Shawn, Heng, and Wai Hong were, and its computers and peripherals such as the mouse and keyboard looked pretty expensive, but most importantly, rather ergonomical. We played CS, then finally a little bit of DotA.
Then at about 7.30pm I had to rush back home as I had an appointment with my mum’s ex-colleague who is now an AIA agent. Mum suddenly had this stroke of an idea that I should purchase my own life insurance so I don’t have to pay a higher premium (since it increases yearly, without fail) next time, when I so decide to get one.
And the way we discussed deaths and “critical illnesses” I had to touch wood like a billion times. The fact that I might be encountering any of the above in the near future scares me, even though it doesn’t seem likely to occur to young people. But then again with how our world is these days and the ever mutating virii and bacteria (super tuberculosis now wtf), you can’t even predict anything anymore. :(
Had a nice two hour discussion on the insurance I should be getting. Finally decided on this ExcelPlus plan, a newly-released insurance plan since last Monday.
Left house at about 10 something, picked up Andy, to Shawn’s place again to MAHJONG. I finished my Malaysian Studies assignment first at his house with my laptop, ‘course.
I’m seriously beginning to fear that I’ll grow addicted to this absolutely fun, time-filling game. And I won like RM3 in the 3 hour game - my first time actually winning anything at all! :D Had tei wu and all that jazz la, which is a rare piece of formation, which means winning on my first round. Played with Yen and Andy, with the latter losing quite a fair bit.
Fetched Shawn to bank for a while after we ended the game at about 1.20am, and fetched the rest back. Reached home at about 1.45am.
Oh and Arsenal ended ManU’s 5-game winning streak in the earlier 11pm-1am match with an 84th minute goal. Huhu. :D

RM969.90?!??
Are they trying to cheat your money or what?? Probably they cheat everyone with the “looks” of the restaurant, thinking that the look is old and therefore the food is cheap XD
Anyway, you’re not paying though. So there’s nothing to worry about.. haha.
