Yesterday afternoon I rang up the Maxdream Entertainment shop at Summit (located near the Teppanyaki shop near the escalator from the basement), looking for a certain ‘Han’. The person in question, I was told, wasn’t in, so I enquired this obviously Chinese-educated dude who could barely understand my English as to the status of my PS2.

The best part was, he replied to me in BM! o_o It isn’t the first time when I encounter such a situation where due to language barriers, both parties resort to our national language - Bahasa Melayu - when all else fail.

I was told my PS2 was fixed by replacing the mod chip inside or something, and I was told the cost for repair would be RM150, which is a lot.

I went with my dad today to collect my PS2, bringing my dad along for the sole purpose of bargaining since I happen to know through experience that shopkeepers are more likely to bargain with you if you speak Cantonese or Mandarin, especially if the shopkeepers themselves are Chinese-educated. The more conservative ones are more or less likely to adopt a language-ist policy and quote expensive prices to you.

I was quite pleasantly surprised by the two shopkeepers’ friendliness and warmth, even though they’re dealing in a business that’s hardly legal. They seemed to be quite knowledgeable in the consoles and the latest games (reason why I’m saying this is because there are people manning gaming shops who barely know what they are), and yes, they actually do speak legible English (and Cantonese, of course). :)

My PS2 seems to be working fine (tested it out at the shop). After some spot of bargaining, the shopkeepers say they can’t lower the price but threw in two free games instead. Huhu.

Thank you Joe for his silver PS2, which had served me well throughout my 27 hours plus of Final Fantasy XII for the past week.

Yep, it might be a little bit pricey, but as far as service is concerned, visit Maxdream Entertainment at The Summit for all your gaming needs!

Joe’s silver PS2 and my own black phat PS2.

Here are some random pictures of my Snow Patrol album, Eyes Open.

The CD (not in picture) and DVD in a cool-looking box.

The back sleeve of booklet. And I liked the sound of it.

In case you haven’t noticed, after hours of experimenting yesterday, I’ve added a Live Search at the sidebar. Very neat, no? :)
