Noli manare, manare in memoria

Derived from the song Advent: One-Winged Angel (obviously from the Advent Children soundtrack), this piece of battle music is sung in Latin, just like songs from other Final Fantasy games are like. Translated, it means: Do not stay behind, stay behind in my memory.

Being a sucker for foreign languages, I love it how they can interweave a beautiful piece of music with mystically-sung Latin. My current favourite song: Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children – The Promised Land is a fine example of such masterpieces. Though many of my friends don’t seem to appreciate it, with some saying it sounds like a requiem and, in Wai Hong’s words, “like Jesus Christ coming to my house”. LOL.

Latin lyrics for Advent: One-Winged Angel:

Noli manere, manare in memoria (x2)
Sephiroth, Sephiroth
Saevam iram, iram et dolorem (x2)
Sephiroth, Sephiroth

Ferum terribile, ferum fatum
Noli manare, manere in memoria (x2)
Sephiroth, Sephiroth

Veni, mi fili. Veni, mi fili
Hic veni, da mihi mortem iterum
Veni, mi fili. Veni, mi fili
Hic veni, da mihi…

Noli manere in memoria
Saevam iram et dolorem
Ferum terribile fatum
Ille iterum veniet

Mi fili, veni, veni, veni, mi fili (x4)

Mi fili, veni, veni, veni, mi fili
(Qui mortem invitavis)
Mi fili, veni, veni, veni, mi fili
(Poena funesta natus)
Mi fili, veni, veni, veni, mi fili
(Noli nomen vocare)
Mi fili, veni, veni, veni, mi fili
(Ille iterum veniet)

Sephiroth, Sephiroth

Sephiroth

And the proper translation:

Do not stay behind, stay behind in my memory (x2)

Sephiroth, Sephiroth

Towards raging anger, anger and pain (x2)

Sephiroth, Sephiroth

Horrible wild (thing), wild fate

Do not stay behind, stay behind in my memory (x2)

Come, my son
Come here, give to me death again
Come, my son
Come here, give me…

Stay behind in my memory
Towards raging anger, anger and pain
Horrible wild (thing), wild fate
That (one) again will come

My son, come, come, come, my son (x4)

My son, come, come, come, my son
(He who has entertained death)
My son, come, come, come, my son
(Punishment polluted by death having sprung forth)
My son, come, come, come, my son
(Do not call my name)
My son, come, come, come, my son
(That [one] again will come)

Sephiroth, Sephiroth

Sephiroth

Latin lyrics for The Promised Land:

Cur in gremio haeremus? (x2)

Cur poenam cordi parvo damus? (x4)

Stella nobis non concessit non concessit (x4)

Stella nobis non concessit non concessit (x4)

In terram fluens
Terram fluens
Venarum pulsus in terram fluens (x2)

Parvum pulsus cormor temducens (x3)
Cormor temducens

Vita mollis in stellam redeunt (x4)

Animam sacrifare necessere est? (x4)

Cur in gremio haeremus? (x4)

Cur veniam petimus? In terra fatali? (x4)

And the translation (might be inaccurate):

Why do we stay in the cradle?
Why do we provide suffering to (our) little heart?

Our star did not leave us, did not leave us
Our star did not leave us, did not leave us

The pulse of veins flowing in the earth
Faint, faint pulse

Heart leading to death
(And) the weak life return to the star
Is it necessary to sacrify the soul?

Why do we stay in the cradle?
Why do we beg for mercy?
In the fatal earth?

Feel free to contact me on MSN for the songs :D

Study group today wasn’t that successful, but still, studied more than what I did at home.

Hey i gotta say It’s a great job, I’ve been looking over a lot of places to find the proper translation of “The One winged Angel.” Always wondered what it meant. Thanks from California!

No problem, glad that helped! I didn’t realise that my imported posts were slightly messed up in blockquotes, so I’ve fixed them as well.

well, actually i took only 60% of the song sense from english translation. i was lucky enough to study latin a bit. that really helped.

ah I see.. latin is an exotic language alright. :)

just curious, did you take the lyrics for One Winged Angel, or The Promised Land, or both?

oh, i took the One-Winged Angel lyrics. i wouldn’t have searched for the song’s lyrics weren’t my aunt curios for them. she’s a choreographer and is constantly in the search for good music. so, when point her the FFIV 2cd album she asked if i could give her an idea what’s the song about. somehow it’s important to her.

wow that is just cool. especially the fact that your aunt’s a choreographer who wants to know what the lyrics mean – i guess it’s important to her as she wants to know how best to interpret the song and transform it into a beautiful dance masterpiece. this goes to show too how videogames aren’t always about the ‘fun’ factor alone, you often could get really brilliant music from them, especially those from the Final Fantasy series.
