Rebecca’s 24th at Decanter Too

Project 365 #76: Thursday, 30th April 2009

My classmate since last semester, Rebecca, invited me to her birthday hang-out at Decanter Too – hell, the moment I heard where she was going to hold this celebration of hers, I jumped on it immediately. Holding a birthday celebration at my favourite bar sounds tremendously enticing.

So I drove from Subang alone after Khai Shin told me that Sam would pick her up – originally the plan was supposed to be fetching her after her Japanese class – and so after getting stuck in a bit of a traffic near Federal Highway at Sunway (typical..), I reached Decanter Too at about 10.30pm, short of the appointed time of 10pm.

There were probably about 6 people when I arrived, and slowly the rest started to stream in. About 10 minutes after I sat down and had beer poured out for me in a mug, Rebecca who was walking from the bar or the toilet came to me and told me that the guy “over there” asked if I’m Clement. I spun around, saw The Bartender, waved at him, and he reciprocated. I was actually amazed that even after all these months of not visiting Decanter Too that he’d still recognise me – I’m not exactly a regular, but this was probably my 5th time there now in 3 months.

A replay of MU beating Arsenal on the TV – Wai Leong, who was sitting on my right at that time, told me the exact time of when MU would score hahahaha.

This woman was earlier dedicating it to her “MGS girls” sitting at the table next to us – and boy does she sing quite well. She was belting a number of Kris Dayanti.. and of course, in the picture, is the man with his solo gig. I may be imagining it as it was rather dark at that time (lights started to dim minutes after I entered this bar), but when he was playing U2’s With or Without You, I swear he was smiling and looking towards my direction.

Pardon me if both of you guys happen to read this entry, but I’m incredibly bad with names. Dude on Rebecca’s left was her.. online friend lol, and both of them had already known each other for years. Dude on the right is dude on the left’s brother’s friend, god what a mouthful.

Voilà – The Bartender! For those of you who aren’t in Subang and who have been wondering for a few months how he looks like.

Come to think of it he does other jobs too other than bartendering like passing request notes to the guitarist-singer (still yet to know his name) and write receipts, but for the purposes of my blog I’ll still stick to his original moniker.

Kenneth told me that Rebecca was incredibly drunk in the toilet and urged me to go there. So with my camera in tow, I went in.

Yen Yee, Manda (on arriving and on seeing me, she pulled me out and wanted me to meet her husband as she had been telling him how she met me and Khai Shin the other day), a clearly drunk Rebecca.

Kenneth, Yi Wen, Sam, Yen Yee, Kah Kit. Yeah, everyone wanted to wear Kah Kit’s oversized glasses and snap pics with it.

Manda’s husband, Manda (Rebecca’s best friend), Rebecca. I’ve written in a past entry that Manda’s only 24, yet has already accomplished many things in life, including a Masters, a good job, and a wedding ring.

At the end of the night, quite a bunch of us were absolutely inebriated. Khai Shin was unexpectedly tipsy as well as she kept reciting the names of the people around her, Rebecca was a goner after that Flaming Lamborghini, while I had an absolutely pleasant time conversing with a few of my coursemates whom I’ve never really gotten to know very well since we’ve never hung out together before, and played some card games with ‘em. It was, as Rebecca said, the largest RMIT gathering to date.

I was in an artificially-induced high from whatever little beer I drank (2 mugs in total) and natural ones from the recognition of the two staffs working at Decanter Too. The chatters and laughters reverberating throughout the bar swelled up as the night went on, and it was quite probable that nearly every table in this bar had a couple of people knocked into the inebriated category.

But that was, as the French say, c’est la vie – jovial laughters were music, genial talks were like amicable chats with a fellow traveller, and it was certainly the most fun I’ve ever had with my fellow collegemates. Other than that unnecessary encounter with the cops when I left the place at 1.30am, Decanter Too has once again succeeded in crafting lasting memories to come.
