Ruby’s birthday

I actually woke up at 6.30am today, all the while thinking, “I can’t believe I’m doing this.” Andy’s mum was supposed to pick me up but she left earlier, so I my mum dropped me off at Tien Tien Fatt where I walked to Andy’s place from there.

And so, we walked to school. We entered school via illegal backway like we were playing truant like before (ah memories), walked across the muddy school field, dropped by at the toilet to wash my legs, walked again to the bicycle shed while ignoring surprised looks from the juniors..

We gathered at Dawina opposite school after talking to a surprised Mr Victor (the new guard was suspicious of us initially) - me, Andy, Suet, Jess, Esther, Fahmi, Shamin.

After talking for a bit over a sucky breakfast, we went back to school again just in time for Ruby’s birthday surprise, where she delivered the same ol’ speech about not remembering her birthday (how can one not remember their own birthdays goes beyond my belief).

Touched by our act of coming to school for her birthday and delivering her presents (Andy and I didn’t bring any), she belanja us food from the canteen, and for the first time in our lives, we sat inside the teacher’s area.

Parents from the PTA talked to us about our future, career prospects and stuff..teachers likewise. When we dropped by at the office again, Ruby delivered her sermon talking about being immune from parents’ incessant scoldings which I find, rather ridiculous. The parents I mean.

School changed a lot in a way; I really kinda missed it. We talked to Miss Then, Pn Senthil..Pn Ooi.. Quite a lot of teachers moved or took long leaves, like Mr Aziz who’s on study leave, Pn Phang moved out, and… our beloved Chem and form teacher Pn Azila is now residing in Johor. Heh.

When we were finally let off from her clutches, we walked to Taipan in search for jobs. I didn’t expect myself to be looking yet, but the first place that came across our tracks was Old Town, famous for their Ipoh White Coffee. Best part is, they looked like they just opened (tomorrow is their official opening day) and they definitely need waiters.

So Andy, Jess, Suet and I applied (later Adrian did the same too). When Andy, Adrian and I returned later to the place with our photostated ICs (save for Adrian), we managed to talk to what looked like a Chinese-educated guy who told us in detail our salaries and anything else we want to know. Basic salary, RM600 (we went wtf?), plus allowance RM260, so it’s pretty decent. We can even get some money off the 5% service charge, overtime, and public holidays.

From the way he explained and telling us that he’ll inform us tomorrow if we get the job or not, it seems as if the three of us are almost certain to get it. I sincerely hope so.

After more walking and filling in forms at Fitness First, bought our lunch at one of the Chinese restaurants there available in abundance, and Andy, Heng and I went back to Andy’s place to crash.

After finishing my lunch and lazing around on his sofa, my eyes could open no more and I dozed off like a thick log for about 3 hours or more. Egads.

Woke up at 5pm when someone played The Brothers Grimm DVD on his telly, so we watched it. Somehow it felt mediocre to me.

Walked back home at nearly 7pm.

Went out again at 8.40pm when Shawn and Angela both came suddenly to my house. The planned mamak session was decided a day before but I thought it was cancelled since there wasn’t any phone calls.

We picked up Andy and we went to Syed Ariff for a drink and talk over stuffs. What else can we do at mamaks?
