Silver-eyed witches

I don’t normally watch anime – much less too popularised ones like Naruto and One Piece that span hundreds of episodes that I’m too lazy to catch up, but considering that I have sufficient amount of time in my hands to watch paint dry, I asked Chris one fine day to recommend a title for me to illegally obtain, thus Claymore was his answer (well, among two titles, that is).

In fact I had too much time I even acquiesced to Tomoko’s invitation to join Facebook at 2am, something I normally wouldn’t bother to do in view that participating in a multitude of networking sites is a waste of time. But it’s one decision I didn’t regret, because let’s face it – Facebook is superior to the incredibly lame Friendster in every aspect, and best of all, Facebook has no intrusive ugly yellow backgrounds, terrible music, and bandwidth-draining videos playing simultaneously ala some of Friendsters’ profiles. Facebook is so clean cut and well-organised, and quite concerned about privacy that there are various options to control it.

But I digress. Anyway, a quick Google showed Claymore as sexy female warriors, so why not? It’ll be an interesting contrast to the vastly masculine 300 movie, although admittedly Claymore is in the form of Japanese animation.

Teresa of Faint Smile, my favourite.

The story is set in a world riddled with monstrous beings called the Yoma, where their roam among the living humans disguised as them and eat human guts whenever possible. A village or town would in the end reluctantly call in the Claymores in which the inhabitants fear, female warriors who are half-human, half-Yoma, to slay such beasts.

That’s as far as the vague gist of the story goes, but once you manage to get past the first few episodes, the story actually gets interesting and gripping. The battles are intensively heart-stopping, but as all fiction goes, one wonders how they could actually recover their wounds at an insane rate (Tom Cruise rising from the dead, anyone?).

Clare, protagonist. I love the name.

What intrigues me was how the original author of the manga (Claymore is based on a manga) managed to come up with the sexiest female names ever – Deneve, Jeane, and Galatea. Because if you ask me to conjure top 3 female names out of the top of my head, I’ll tell you Susie, Mary, and Julie.

I devoted my entire day yesterday to watching the show, and finished watching 16 out of the 26 episodes slated for it (the other 10 will be released weekly). Now to wait Prison Break Season 1’s entire 7.71GBs to be completed…
