When a child grows up

Sometimes whenever I see a child – be it a baby or a toddler – apart from admiring how cute these drool-prone beings are, I wonder what will they be when they grow up. It struck me that the people we condemn collectively – murderers, rapists, Mat Rempits, drug addicts – were once a child, were once cooed by patronising relatives and family, were once what we used to label as ‘cute’.

They once were like any of us – during our younger days, when asked to fill in the field of ‘Ambition’ in our report cards or during some class exercises, we’ll see the generic professions: doctors, engineers, accountants.. all respectable jobs, ideals imposed on us by overbearing parents. (Truth is, ask me if I still like to be a doctor and I’ll reply confidently “Hell no”.)

These days whenever I see a child, I’ll silently ask, “Will you be the next serial rapist? The next Angkasawan? The next pirated discs vendor? The next award-winning local director? The next transvestite?”

Maybe the more accurate question that should be posed to these society-misfits is, “What went wrong?”

Went out for studying at McD’s Taipan as usual at night yesterday, with Ding and Andy (yeah even though different courses our finals are on similar dates).

Once done with our rather productive session, we called a few people and since all were either not available or didn’t want to go, the three of us ate and drank at OldTaste Kopitiam wtf – a direct copy of OldTown Kopitiam, logo, wallpaper, and all. Answering Ding’s question on whether OldTown would (successfully) sue OldTaste, the answer is no – refer to McDonald’s System of Australia Pty Ltd v McWilliam’s Wines Pty Ltd (different elements of the case compared to OldTaste’s issue but the main principles are established) *law nerd wtf.
