It’s that inevitable time of the year again. If there are three things that you can’t avoid in life as a Chinese, it’s the encounter of lalas, a sorry existence of the Chinese sub-species of the fashionably impaired; the infamous Chinese bad words that made their way into every race in Malaysia, such as mahai and diu and lan; and, *drumroll* - Chinese New Year!
I hate the visiting drama attached to this festivity. Visiting countless of people who speak in tongues you don’t understand, whom you only see once a year (most of them once per several years), seems slightly pointless to me. It’s an adult thing I prolly won’t understand until I become as old as my parents.
Went to my paternal grandma’s place in Kajang yesterday night for a reunion dinner. Watching her explode in excitement and happiness makes me feel a little warm inside, since we rarely ever see one another now. Then went back to my maternal grandma’s place, to watch fireworks being set off (illegally).
Ironically, my uncle is the ketua kampung and is a member of the MCA, but he loves setting off illegally-obtained fireworks.
Spent most of my time today from 12pm till 9pm visiting obscure relatives in Seremban, whom I haven’t met for years. I remember seeing them a lot in my childhood days..
I ended up spending most of my time watching whatever was playing on the television, or sleeping on the sofa while sitting upright - my ability to sleep anywhere at anytime must be most admirable. :)
Yeah, I hate visiting during CNY. Bloody bore. At one of the houses (which was a nicely-decorated, modern-looking, expensive one), all the adults were sitting around the dining table chatting away while the few ‘kids’ sat around, staring at empty space.
Thank god my mum’s understanding enough, so today, the first day of Chinese New Year is the end of all relative-visiting. Supposed to visit my maternal grandma tomorrow, but since we’ve already done that the night before CNY, mum said she’ll let me off and go wherever I want to go myself tomorrow.
Woot.
I spent most of my time in the car playing DS. Heh. Playing with my pet miniature schnauzer makes me want to own a real one in real life (NOT because it’s the year of the freaking dog), but I might get one after I start working in my 20s or something.
Received CNY greetings via SMS from various people in the morning, from my old friend Alina to teachers like Pn Tuan Zainab and Pn Tan Lan Lan.
With Chinese New Year, it has been some strange longtime held tradition to have the sun blazing down on earth, causing humans and animals alike to perspire profusely. A strange coincidence, or some supernatural force at work.
With CNY, it’s also the time of the year when rich and not-so-rich kids compare their angpow earnings. The only bright side I see out of this reddish festival is the red packets we receive. Easy money for doing next to nothing, compared to working at the kopitiam.
I think I’ll quit the damn place and get a job at F1 instead.
